Agus Frimanto won the Rusty Gromfest surfing competition, surpassing fellow Lembongan prodigy Putra Hermawan in the overall rankings, resulting in a dramatic conclusion to the three-stage Rusty Gromfest Series Bali 2009.
The series launched at Keramas in February, followed by an event at Pererenan in March, then culminated at Halfway Kuta Beach in challenging conditions.
Competitors were split into two age divisions - under 14 and under 16 - with Rusty's team of pro surfers taking on scoring duties under the watchful eye of ISC judges. Over eighty grommets participated in each event.
The contests were free to enter with complimentary lunch and goody bags for everyone. Fun games and product giveaways were held throughout the day to engage the hordes of spectators and beach-goers.
Over the duration of the series the stand out surfers in the under 14 division have been Jeren (Canggu), Koko (Nusa Dua), Mansyur (Sumbawa), Blacky (Legian), and Ediana (Lembongan). The future of Indonesian surfing is in good hands with this lot, who all come from diverse backgrounds but have one thing in common: they absolutely rip!
Jeren was in his element, winning each of his heats, and then claiming his maiden victory after going mental in the final. Ediana lost in the semis but still clenched the overall series title after finishing runner-up at Keramas and winning Pererenan.
In the under 16 division much of the attention has been focused on the Lembongan duo of Putra Hermawan and Agus Frimanto who have had consistent finals berths.
Putra had built a commanding ratings lead following two consecutive victories in the first two events (Agus placed 2nd and 3rd) but the additional 25% points up for grabs at Halfway meant that Agus was mathematically still in the running to take the overall title.
Putra and Agus met in the semi finals where Agus took it to the next level with a spectacular display of confident, critical surfing. He stomped a 360 air-reverse to take the heat and advance into the final alongside Ahmad Kamal while Putra fell victim to the flat, unresponsive ocean.
This left the door wide open for Agus, who would need to finish second or better to take the series title.
With so much at stake, Agus Frimanto put all the pressure aside and destroyed every wave he caught in the final, winning convincingly. He has been awarded a chance to compete against the best international junior surfers at the 14th annual Rusty Gromfest held at Lennox Head, Australia in July 2009.
"I'm so happy to win the event and get the ticket to Australia" beamed Agus after the podium celebration. "I can't wait to surf Lennox Head, Snapper Rocks and all the great waves there... but first it's time to party!!!"

Indonesian Surfers Go Big at Garuda Indonesia Travel Scene Pro JPSA Contest in Keramas
Text and Photo: Tim Hain
At the end of the fifth and final day of the Garuda Indonesia Travel Scene Pro Japan Professional Surfing Association (JPSA) contest at Keramas Beach on Sunday the 12th of April, three of Indonesia’s best pro surfers all finished with spots on the podium, surfing against some very strong Japanese competitors in superb wave conditions.
Each year Bali plays host to a JPSA pro surf contest, this year named the Garuda Indonesia Travel Scene Pro, at the black sand beach of Keramas on the East Coast of Bali. After four days of mediocre wave conditions, the morning light revealed the refreshing sight of 3-4 foot roping barrels breaking over the ragged lava reef, giving the surfers a real chance to bust out their most radical tricks for the judges.
Long barrels, huge gouging cutbacks, radical vertical maneuvers, and aerials punctuated the JPSA Men’s quarter, semi, and final heats. Indonesia’s Pepen Hendrik, the 2004 Indonesian Surfing Champion who at 32 years of age still surfs on both the ISC and the JPSA Tours, barreled and slashed his way into to a 3rd place finish against the much younger Japanese competition.
After the Men’s and Women’s finals, a select group of 8 Indonesian surfers were invited to compete against their Japanese peers in what was called the “Bali-Japan Friendship Game”. Last year’s 2008 ISC Champion Dede Suryana from West Java headed up the group that included young rippers Garut Widiarta, Mustofa Jeksen and Raditya Rondi from Kuta, Robot Susiana and Putra Hermawan from Nusa Lembongan, and was rounded out by veterans Made Awan (Serangan) and Dedi Santoso (Kuta).
There was many a brilliant display of competitive surfing during the hotly contested event, with the boys going all out for that top spot on the podium and to claim victory for the national pride of their country. Dede “Who’s your Dede” Suryana left no doubt in anybody’s mind that he wanted that top podium spot all to himself, busting out airs, tubes, and huge hacks to bring it all home in the final. Second and fourth spots when to the Japanese guys, while Made Awan did himself proud with a third place finish, getting in some air time of his own.

Billabong Pro Java
Cimaja
May 20-23, 2009
In a riveting 30 minute final at the Billabong Pro Java in Cimaja with just four minutes remaining, ISC Number 2 ranked surfer Lee Wilson came from behind and took over the lead in a hard fought victory against Number 13 ranked Dedy Santoso, scoring a 8 out of 10 on smallish wave that he literally ripped apart all the way into the beach.
Wilson was behind for most of the final and needed a 6.25 to take the lead, true to his trademark style he didn’t hold anything back, almost landing on top of a large rock on the inside section on his last maneuver. Santoso bravely fought back, but couldn’t get the 8 point wave he needed to regain the lead that he had held trough the majority of the final.
Then to leave no doubt about his intent to claim a decisive victory, the Billabong team rider spotted a worthy wave and again ripped it apart, this time adding an air on the end which got him a 9.0 from the judges, as well as the Coca-Cola ISC Best Maneuver Award. “I’m super stoked to have won the event” Wilson beamed, “Especially in Dede’s (Suryana) home town. The people, waves, and hospitality in Cimaja have been great I’m looking forward to getting back here next year”. Wilson wins Rp 10 million (about $1,000 USD) and tallies up 3,000 ISC Championship points.
